Sri Lanka situated in the tropics is never out of season and is blessed with a climate of your dreams if you are looking for sunny beaches and beach-side resorts to cater to your every need. Most of the hotels and resorts are located around beaches. Being an Island, there are thousands of miles of beaches of various sizes and environments. The southern and western beaches are most popular and begins from Negombo which is 37 km north of Colombo and stretches round the southern end for 273 km right up to Hambantota.
The southern part of Colombo is called the “Gold Coast” as most of the golden beaches with most of the hotels and resorts are located in this area. This stretch of beach begins from Mt. Lavinia and continues along the towns of Wadduwa, Kalutara, Beruwela, Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa, Dondra, Dickwella, Tangalle and ends with Hambantota. These can be called “user-friendly” because they do not shelve deeply into the sea and are rather sandier.
The northern and eastern area of the Island provides a good choice of beaches from Arugam Bay upto Kuchchaveli (275 km). There are wide stretches of sand, pretty coves, bays, natural harbors, underwater coral gardens and lagoons. Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Mable Bay, Sweat Bay and Dead Man’s Cove where you will find a beautiful harbor are places that will fulfill your desires. In the southern part of the east coast you will find the beautiful beaches of Passikudah, Kalkudah and Arugam Bay.
